Free of charge dental treatment
During the war in Croatia (1991 - 1995) the city of Dubrovnik was besieged and attacked by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) forces in late 1991. The 13th century old city located in Dubrovnik is the southernmost part of Dalmatia and a well known tourist destination (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and was therefore demilitarized during the Communist Yugoslavia because it was considered that military presence does not go hand to hand with tourism. Because of this, when Croatia voted for independence in 1991, it was one of the few major cities in Croatia not to have major JNA military forces in the area. Consequently, it was attacked and severely bombarded, especially civilian targets and drawing much international attention. During this period Dr. Pero Šutalo provided totally free dental treatment to a large number of uniformed soldiers as well as war affected civilians in need of dental treatment.
Till today, Pro Bono dental work is continued and provided on a regular monthly basis to local teenagers whom are not in a position to afford quality dentistry.
